Privacy Notice
The ID8 Greenhouse is run by ID8 Lab Foundation. This notice explains what we collect when you use it, who can see it, and what we do with it. Questions go to info@id8lab.us.
What we collect
- Your account. Your email address and a password, or, if you sign in with Google, the name, email address and photo Google shares with us. Passwords are stored only in a form that cannot be turned back into the password.
- Your phone number, when we ask for one. A US mobile number, confirmed once with a code we text you.
- Your profile. The display name, headline, skills and photo you choose to add.
- What you post. Ideas, questions, replies, offers of help, and messages in discussion rooms.
- Your picks. Which ideas you choose during an event.
- Your answers when you join. That you are 13 or older, that you have read this notice and the Participation Rules, whether you are a UIUC student, faculty or staff member, another student or a member of the community, how you heard about the programme if you tell us, whether you want updates about future events, and when you answered.
- Technical information. Our hosting providers record IP addresses, browser types and request times, so they can run the site and protect it.
Why we collect it
- To run the event: show your ideas, count picks, open discussion rooms, and tell you when one opens.
- To keep it to one account per person, which is how we keep the vote fair. When we ask for a phone number, that is what it is for.
- To understand who takes part and how they found out, so the programme can reach more people next year. We report these as totals, never by name.
- To sign you in, and to send you messages about the event you joined, such as when voting opens and closes and what the results are.
- To tell you about future ID8 activities, only if you ticked the box for it.
- To keep the site working and secure.
We do not sell your information, and we do not use it for advertising.
Who can see what
| What | Who can see it |
|---|---|
| Ideas you publish, and public questions and replies on them | Anyone, including people who are not signed in. An idea entered in an event stays private to you and the organisers until that event’s submissions close. |
| Your display name, headline, skills and photo | Anyone signed in. Your name and photo may also appear beside your public posts. |
| Offers of help | You and the idea’s author. |
| That you have joined an idea’s team | Anyone signed in, once the author accepts you. |
| Your picks | Not other participants. The event organisers can see who picked what, because they decide which ideas get a room. |
| Messages in a discussion room | The people in that room. |
| Your email address, phone number and the answers above | Never shown on the site. The organisers who manage the database can see them. |
Who we share it with
Service providers that run parts of the site for us, and only for that purpose:
- Supabase, for the database, accounts and file storage.
- Vercel, for hosting the website.
- Twilio, for sending the confirmation text.
- Resend, for sending email.
- Google, only if you choose to sign in with Google.
We do not give your contact details to sponsors, partners or other participants. If a sponsor wants to reach the people behind an idea, they come to us, and we ask you before passing anything on. We may disclose information where the law requires it.
Text messages
The only text we send without asking is your confirmation code. Message and data rates may apply. If you opt in to updates, reply STOP to any of them, or write to us, and they stop.
Photos and stories
We may share ideas, project stories and photos taken at ID8 events to tell people about the programme and to promote future rounds, naming people by their display name. Agreeing to this notice when you join includes this. If you would rather a particular photo or story of yours were not used, write to info@id8lab.us and we will stop using it. We ask a parent or guardian before using a photo of anyone under 18.
Cookies
We use only the cookies that keep you signed in. There are no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and our fonts are served from our own site rather than a third party’s.
Age
You must be 13 or older to join. If you are under 18, talk to a parent or guardian before you do. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 13, we delete it.
How long we keep it, and deleting it
We keep your information for as long as your account exists. You can delete your own ideas at any time from your ideas, and change your profile whenever you like.
To delete your account, write to info@id8lab.us from the email address on it. We delete it within 30 days, together with your phone number, your profile, your picks and everything you posted. Our providers’ technical logs are deleted on their own schedules.
Your choices
Write to us to get a copy of your information, to correct it, to delete it, or to change your answer about updates.
Changes to this notice
If we change this notice, we change the date at the top. If a change affects how we use information you have already given us, we ask you again before it applies to you.
